To make West Berkshire the best place to start and grow a business

Cutting the ribbon at the official re-opening of Camp Hopson in Northbrook Street after its £3m refurbishment.

Business in West Berkshire is thriving. That is the message I get from my visits to local businesses. We have an unemployment rate of 0.6% which is amongst the lowest in the country. Locally, as nationally, employment is at a record high.We have a skilled and versatile workforce and exciting innovative companies in this area. But we must not be complacent. Every job opportunity needs to be supported. Every new business in West Berkshire is good for our economy and good for families, communities and society in general.

Following on from the reforms to business rates in the last Budget, the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement reiterated the commitment to cut corporation tax to 17% by 2020 and to reduce the business rate burden by £6.7 billion over the next 5 years. This is good news for the nearly 9,000 businesses registered in the Newbury constituency and I will continue to work to ensure that this area remains one of the best places to start and grow a business.

There are challenges ahead particularly as negotiations start over Brexit. I am aware that West Berkshire voted to remain and I am committed to do everything I can to make sure West Berkshire businesses get the best deal possible.

Indeed I would go further, I have seen young men remain calm amid provocation that would drive most people to uncontrolled violence. That is why having such professional armed forces is something of which we can all be proud...
