The Early Years Minister, Nadhim Zahawi, has just announced that the supplementary funding for maintained nursery schools will be extended to cover the summer term of 2020, with £24 million being made available nationally for this purpose.

Richard said, ‘I am delighted that the Minister has responded to pressure from myself and many other MPs with maintained nursery schools in their constituencies. I pay tribute to the hard work of Victoria Park Nursery School and Family Hub, and to the Hungerford Nursery School Centre for Children and Families, who have both lobbied hard for this change. These nursery schools were being asked to admit children in autumn 2019 without knowing whether funding would be available for the full school year. It is only common sense that funding has now been extended and I am grateful to the Minister and the Department for Education for listening to concerns and providing certainty on this issue.

‘I have seen at first hand the excellent work these nurseries do with the children and their families in their care and I will continue to work to ensure that their needs are met in the next Spending Review.’
